If you care anything at all about music, then you’ve probably imagined what the Soundtrack of Your Life would be.
The song that was playing during your first kiss.
The song that always makes you think of your mom.
The song that always makes you smile.
The song that is so sad that it never fails to make you cry.

I thought I could narrow it down to 100 songs and even that would be stretching it a bit too long. But as I went through all my songs (about 30,000 mp3’s) the list ballooned up to 150, then 200, and then 225.

Every single song had some meaning behind it. Hans Zimmer’s “Beach Song” from the movie, “True Romance” absolutely HAD to be on the list. I think it’s one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.

“TNT” by AC/DC was probably one of the first contemporary rock songs that started me on my musical journey. So that had to be on there – the toughest part was only selecting one song from that iconic band. I tried to keep it to one song from each band but I failed a couple times. I had the same struggles with bands like The Pixies, The Pogues, and Rancid – my God, “Ruby Soho” or “Journey to the End of the Bay”? How to choose? And don’t even get me started on The Ramones, or Alice Cooper!

Then there were obscure songs by even more obscure bands that probably no one had ever heard of and weird songs that couldn’t possibly hold any deeper meaning for any normal person. There were classical instrumentals, Zydeco toe tappers, Classic Rock, and Eighties Pop. Punk, Metal, Rap, and cheesy songs from the 1950’s. Tunes that your grandparents probably liked, and songs that are still on heavy rotation on top 40 radio stations. When someone says that their taste in music runs toward the eclectic, my eyes automatically narrow and I resist the urge to sneer, “Prove it.”

Ah music, where would our lives be without it? How drab, dreary, and impossible… impossible because even in a world without music, someone would bang a stick against a tree trunk and enjoy the sound it made so they would do it again, and then try a different beat, a different cadence, and there you have it, a brand-new caveman song. Music is woven into our very DNA as an essential part of our existence. If the caveman’s stick breaks, a singing bird roosting in the tree will pick up the beat and carry on.

I included the list from my soundtrack for you to peruse. Maybe you’ll see a song or two that resonates with you and might just appear on your own list. And I do encourage that – you creating your own soundtrack list. I think it’s great therapy to not only play those songs, but to take a stroll down memory lane… oops, I mean dance down memory lane.
